There are lots of places to look for more information and helpful resources for shovelers. Locally, start with the City ofChicago, which has long promoted sidewalk snow removal as a basic civic duty. There’s a handy new brochure that spells out the nuances of the law with a note from Mayor Emanuel.

The Chicago Department of Transportation and the Mayor’s Pedestrian Advisory Council are applauding businesses that keep thier sidewalks exceptionally clear with the  the “Winter Wonder” award. Anyone can make nominations at 312-744-3623 or online.  And theres a Winter Wonder Poster too, so contenders can promote the program.

CDOT also has door hangers as a reminder to shovel the sidewalk and offer help to those unable to shovel. The hangers are mailed to alderman, businesses and community groups across the city.

The Active Transportation Alliance, Chicago’s voice for better biking, walking and transit, also reminds us that clear sidewalks are critical for year round mobility. They’ve got a nice Thank You for Shoveling flyer you can print out to encourage your neighbors.
